Dr. Chen specializes in physical activity program design and evaluation. Specific expertise includes children/adolescent physical activity measurement and evaluation as related to the physical, cognitive, and motivational domains. His research focus has been on interest-based and value-based motivation in children and adolescents as related to participation behavior and learning outcomes in physical education. Dr. Chen has served as the Chair of Curriculum and Instruction Academy of National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and is the current Chair of Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education Special Interest Group of the American Education Research Association (AERA). He has published over 30 research articles and is a leading scholar on children/adolescent interest in physical activity and motivational impact of physical education curricula. Current research projects that Dr. Chen is working on include "Be Active Kids!" and "Learn for Life" funded by NIH and USDE. He is the current Pedagogy Section Editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and an editorial board member for Contemporary Educational Psychology and the international journal of Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy. Dr. Chen has served as a reviewer for American Educational Research Journal, Contemporary Educational Psychology, Urban Education, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Journal of Teaching in Physical education, Journal of Physical Activity and Health, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, and others. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1993 and worked as faculty members at the University of Hawaii - Manoa and Arizona State University.
