James M. Hagberg , Ph.D.
Professor
Exercise Physiology
RESEARCH
Dr. Hagberg has authored more than 170 research publications primarily in the area of the effect of acute and chronic endurance exercise on cardiovascular disease risk factors in the elderly. His recent research has focused on the impact of common polymorphic genetic variations on the magnitude of cardiovascular disease risk factor improvements with endurance exercise training in older persons. Dr. Hagberg is currently the Principal Investigator on an NIH Predoctoral Training Grant with Ben Hurley, PhD, that provides stipends and tuition to PhD students in the area of exercise physiology and aging. Dr. Hagberg is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research, and the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. He is also an elected member of the American Physiological Society. In 1998 Dr. Hagberg was the University of Maryland College Park Life Sciences Inventor of the year for his work in the area of genetic markers that affect the degree of improvement in cardiovascular disease risk factors with exercise training in older persons.
