Frequently Asked Questions
Application Procedures
Visit our department website, and learn about the department, specifically learning about each of the four areas of concentration. Narrow your focus to one of those areas.
Identify which faculty's research interests you most. When writing your research statement, clearly show a relationship between your research interest and that of the faculty with whom you are interested in studying.
Email the faculty member if you have questions about their research foci. Email addresses for each faculty can found under the "people" link on the department website.
Be aware that you may submit each section separately or all at once. It's best to submit something, rather than waiting until you have everything completed. Waiting may delay the process.
Once your full application is submitted, you will receive an email acknowledgment, and a request to submit your ASF (Applicant Supplemental Form). The ASF is the step where you upload your research statement and submit the names and email addresses of the individuals whom you have asked to submit a letter of recommendation. They will be sent an email prompting them to complete your recommendation on-line.

After submitting the ASF, you will not be allowed to make further changes to your application. However, you may contact the Graduate Studies Office (**cc:dla@umd.edu) to discuss any changes to additional material that you may wish to submit.
