Faculty

The Department of Kinesiology is comprised of 25 full-time faculty:

  • 4 Assistant professors
  • 8 Associate professors
  • 6 Full professors
  • 5 Lecturers
  • 3 Research Assistant Professors

Five faculty are active, elected members of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education (the honorary organization limited to the top 125 leaders in the field). One faculty member along with his collaborator were the University of Maryland's 1997 Inventor of the Year. Four faculty have held elected office in national scholarly organizations in the field (three as Presidents). Four faculty in the Department affiliate with the Neural and Cognitive Sciences program (NACS). Several faculty have affiliate appointments in the Center on Aging, the Departments of Psychology and Communication and the Medical School at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

In addition to its undergraduate and graduate programs in kinesiology, the Department has two courses in the University CORE for Distributive Studies:

  • KNES 260: Science of Physical Activity & Cardiovascular Health
  • KNES 287: Sport and American Society
  • KNES 293: History of Sport in America

One course in CORE that fulfills the Diversity requirement:

  • KNES 240: Exploring Cultural Diversity through Movement

One CORE Capstone course:

  • KNES 497: Independent Studies Seminar

The Department also offers two University Honors Program seminars

  • HONR 258O: Kinesiological Basis of Sport
  • HONR 328P: Biophysical Aspects of Wellness

Additionally, the Department of Kinesiology provides over 169 course sections for nearly 5,000 students a year with educationally-based physical activity classes.
