Title: Toe-based physical activity on fall risk in the elderly.
Committee Members: Dr. Jane Clark, Dr. Erin Hager, and Dr. Jennifer Roberts
Abstract: Elderly individuals aged 65 years and older are the fastest growing age segment of the global population, particularly those aged 85 and older. Falls are a major problem affecting roughly 30 percent of the elderly population, and are largely considered to be preventable with regular physical activity. Unfortunately, physical activity decreases with age. The toes play a vital role in the maintenance of balance and stability, but lack of physical activity diminishes their functional capabilities. The purpose of this capstone project is to design a physical activity intervention to assess whether a toe-focused intervention is more effective at reducing fall-risk compared to typical walking interventions.
