Joan Hult Women's History Month Lecture: Women and Sport: Where Are We Now?
Sue Sherburne, PhD, UMD Senior Associate Athletic Director and Missy Meharg, UMD Head Field Hockey Coach, will share how their past and present experiences have shaped their ongoing career successes in the Department of Kinesiology's annual Joan Hult Women's History Month lecture. They will also discuss their outlook on future leadership opportunities for women in sport.
Dr. Sherburne was named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student Development in February of 2016. She oversees the Academic Success, Community Engagement and Student-Athlete Advocacy units, has developed curriculum and instructs educational sessions as part of the Transition Education and Readiness Program (TERP 101) and directs efforts to maintain and build upon the deep rooted Traditions and Pride that make Maryland Athletics unique. Dr. Sherburne is a member of the Athletic Director's Executive Leadership Team and also manages the day-to-day operations of all leadership, career, and personal development programming for the Athletic Department's Brand U Program. In addition, she serves as the primary advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a member of the Step Up! Bystander Intervention National Advisory Board.
Head coach Missy Meharg has been at the helm of the Terrapin field hockey program for 30 years, along the way building a program rich with a winning tradition. Voted National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times, Ms. Meharg has exemplified the tradition of excellence Maryland field hockey has become known for, a program with eight National Championships and 22 conference championships - solidifying the Terrapins' position among the top programs in the nation.
