Congratulations to the class of 2018!

The University of Maryland School of Public Health will hold its Spring 2018 graduation ceremony at the Xfinity Center on May 19 for undergraduate, masters and doctoral students who have successfully completed their degree requirements.
This event celebrates the students' academic accomplishments in addition to providing support and encouragement for their future paths. Dean Lushniak invites students and their guests to return to the SPH building immediately following the ceremony for light snacks, mingling with faculty and staff and photo opportunities. 

Note:  Walking in the commencement ceremony is a privilege reserved for students who are on track to completing ALL degree requirements by the end of the spring semester.  You must be in your final courses for your degree this semester in order to walk.  If you are finishing coursework over the summer, you will be invited to participate in the commencement ceremony in December.

Keynote Speaker

Rear Admiral (RADM) Sylvia Trent-Adams, PhD, RN, FAAN
Deputy Surgeon General

As Deputy Surgeon General, Rear Admiral (RADM) Sylvia Trent-Adams advises and supports the Surgeon General regarding operations of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps and in communicating the best available scientific information to advance the health of the nation. She served as the Chief Nurse Officer of the USPHS from November 2013 through May 2016. In this role, she advised the Office of the Surgeon General and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention, and career development of Corps nurse professionals.


RADM Trent-Adams has held various positions in HHS, working to improve access to care for poor and underserved communities. As a clinician and administrator, she has had a direct impact on building systems of care to improve public health for marginalized populations domestically and internationally.

Prior to joining the Office of the Surgeon General, RADM Sylvia Trent-Adams was the Deputy Associate Administrator for the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). She assisted in managing the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act of 2009 (Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program). The $2.3 billion program funds medical care, treatment, referrals and support services for uninsured and underserved people living with HIV disease as well as training for health care professionals.

RADM Trent-Adams began her career in the Commissioned Corps of the USPHS in 1992. She has published numerous articles, participated in research studies, and presented to a variety of domestic and international organizations and professional groups. Prior to joining the USPHS, RADM Trent-Adams was a nurse officer in the U.S. Army. She also served as a research nurse at the University of Maryland. RADM Trent-Adams also completed two internships in the U.S. Senate where she focused on the prospective payment system for skilled nursing facilities and scope of practice for nurses and psychologists. She has served as guest lecturer at the University of Maryland and Hampton University. Her clinical practice was in trauma, oncology, community health, and infectious disease. She has also served as the Chair of the Federal Public Health Nurse Leadership Council, and the Federal Nursing Service Council.

RADM Trent-Adams received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University, a Master of Science in Nursing and Health Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She became a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2014.


Student Speaker

Samiha Ahmed, BS Public Health Science

Samiha Ahmed has known since she was very young that she is passionate about working in health care. She spent her four undergraduate years taking credit overloads to earn dual degrees in Public Health Science and Neurobiology and Physiology, and to graduate from the university's Integrated Life Sciences Honors program. She has worked in several research labs, from child development and genetic engineering to neurophysiological and social development. When she is not busy with academics, Samiha loves to travel, do service projects, art projects, and spend quality time with the people around her. This has led her to become an Alternative Breaks trip leader, a leader in the Muslim Students Association, and vice president of a local service organization based on campus, Beyond Relief, all while avidly photographing her adventures. Post-graduation, Samiha hopes to continue working as a medical scribe at Howard County General Hospital while she applies to medical school. 

Student Arrival

Note:  The Xfinity center will have security checks at all entrances so please allow plenty of time to enter the facility. 

Graduating students will report to the Auxiliary Gym (Pavillion) no later than 8:00am and check into their degree’s check-in table. To get to the Auxiliary Gym, enter Gate D (northeast corner of Xfinity Center by parking lot 4b) on the lower level and the Gym is on that level. 

In order to participate in the ceremony, all students must be dressed in regalia (cap and gown).  If you have not purchased regalia yet, you can find the details on how to do this on the main commencement website at  

Ticket Information

Tickets are not required for the SPH commencement ceremony, although they are required to attend the university-wide commencement ceremony.

If you plan to attend the campus-wide commencement ceremony on Sunday afternoon, tickets ARE REQUIRED and are limited to four for each student.  Details about how to obtain these tickets can be found at

Directions and Parking

Directions to the XFINITY Center

Parking for you and your guests is available in any lot or parking garage on campus. However, the best parking is available in Lots 4, 6 (Terrapin Trail Garage), 9 and 11 surrounding the Xfinity Center. There are handicap parking spaces available in these lots, but they are limited. Parking is available on a first come, first served basis. We recommend guests to utilize public transportation as much as possible to help reduce the amount of vehicle traffic on campus. To this end, Transportation Services will be running shuttles between the Metro and Campus along with routes throughout the campus to get people to the different ceremonies.

 We encourage you to utilize public transportation when possible.  Additionally, if you have guests who cannot walk far distances, we recommend dropping them close to the building and then going to park the car.  Click here for an interactive map of campus.

Bag Policy

All guests will only be able to carry the following into the stadium:
*Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5” x 6.5” with or without a handle or strap 
All other bags will not be permitted. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles.

The University of Maryland cannot safeguard items which are not permitted into the stadium.
