Two Days, $1.5 Million in Free Dental Care at UMD
On September 5-6, 2014, UMD’s XFINITY Center was transformed into a mobile dental clinic to provide $1.5 million of free dental care and preventive health services to more than 1,000 underserved, uninsured, and underinsured adults at the Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival.
The event was a collaborative effort by the dental and health care community, Catholic Charities of Washington and the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity to provide free emergency dental care to the poor and underserved.
In addition to providing a number of free dental services to adult patients in need, the group sought to enhance the overall health of this population by creating a caring environment for health screening, health and legal education and referral services.
Dental services were provided by licensed dentists and hygienists, and included cleaning, endontics/root canals, restorative fillings, and extractions. Exhibitors provided additional free health services including cholesterol checks, flu shots, eye examinations, HIV rapid tests and educational one-on-one talks with attorneys, nutritionists and counselors.
