Dr. Jinhee Kim Awarded Full Professorship in Department of Family Science
Family Science Associate Professor Dr. Jinhee Kim was recently awarded promotion from Associate Professor to Full Professor. Her new role will take effect in August of this year. Dr. Kim was given appointments in both the Department of Family Science and the University of Maryland Extension as a Family Finance Specialist in 2000. During the past 17 years she has provided leadership of a statewide Extension program in family finance. She also has conducted applied research examining the relationships between financial decision-making, socioeconomic status, stress, and family health. Her most recent publications have reviewed financial decision-making in shared and blended households, and bank account ownership among youth of various race and ethnic groups.
Dr. Kim is a national leader of family finance initiatives and recently completed a term as President of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, a position for which she was elected by her peers. She has held appointments including Director of Research at the National Institute for Personal Finance Employee Education and Vice President of the Personal Finance Employee Education Foundation. She also was a Board member of the American Council on Consumer Interests. Her work has brought personal and workplace finance curricula to consumers and finance professionals both regionally and nationally. Her curricula and research examines numerous financial and resource management challenges faced by families including the relationship between financial well-being and workplace performance, health outcomes, financial literacy, financial security, tax relief, and consumer debt. Dr. Kim has focused on vulnerable racial/ethnic minorities, the economically disadvantaged, and more recent immigrants as well as youth and young adults. She has received “best article” of the year award from both the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning and the Family and Consumer Science Research Journal.
Dr. Kim is known for the educational programs she has developed and offered to state Extension educators, youth, human service professionals, low income families, UMD faculty and staff, couple and family therapists, the military, and numbers of government and non-profit organizations. She has received numbers of teaching awards including ones from the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education, and the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
