School of Public Health Dean Boris Lushniak weighs in on the abrupt resignation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Brenda Fitzgerald in this story in The Hill

From the article: "The departure of the CDC director so close to the budget discussions is significant because agencies rely on political appointees to communicate and negotiate with the administration that appointed them, said Boris Lushniak, a former deputy surgeon general and acting surgeon general who is dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health."

“What I think that most major government organizations lose when there is a resignation is a political connection — the connection with the administration at the White House falls on the shoulders of career-track people, who are capable of that, but are not tuned to the political forces that exist out there,” Dean Lushniak is quoted as saying in the story.
