University of Maryland School of Public Health alumna Dr. Maria Fernandez ('89, M.A. '92, Ph.D. '95) was honored at the 2016 Alumni Association Gala on September 30, 2016.

Dr. Fernandez, who recently became director of the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research, is an internationally-known expert in the field of health promotion and concern control. She has conducted studies ranging from the description of conceptual models of cancer control, to the development and evaluation of interventions to increase cancer control, to the science of understanding and accelerating the use of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings.

In addition to co-authoring “Planning Health Promotion Programs: An Intervention Mapping Approach,” Dr. Fernandez has received over $12 million in funding as principal investigator (PI) over the last five years, is PI on nine and co-PI on four federally and state-funded studies and collaborates as a co-investigator on five other studies. Her work is featured in 106 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters.
