Using churches, barbershops and beauty shops to spread health information can help African-Americans live longer lives, said Department of Health Services Administration Professor Stephen Thomas, at a Sunday forum in a Pittsburgh church.

Dr. Thomas, one of the nation's leading scholars on eliminating racial and ethnic and health disparities, spoke at the forum along with several other experts, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“A lot of people thought the race issue was solved and now it is back as an issue,” said Dr. Thomas, a former University of Pittsburgh professor who now directs the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Equity. “I’m happy we’re talking about it and doing it in a black church.”
