The University of Maryland, College Park is preparing to create the nation's first Center for Health Literacy to address the major public health problem of poor health literacy, eliminate health disparities through improved public health and promote and conduct health literacy research and related education.

In June, the College of Health and Human Performance also established the Herschel S. Horowitz Endowed Chair in Health Literacy, with a generous gift of $2 million. The gift also names the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy.
