The Horowitz Center for Health Literacy is hosting a teach-in series focused on understanding and responding to information and claims about the coronavirus pandemic, racial justice protests, and the 2020 elections and their aftermath. 

While the events of 2020 have overshadowed many aspects of everyday life, you may not have had an opportunity in or outside class to process your feelings and beliefs about them. A university should be the ideal space to do this work, and the UMD Center for Health Literacy wants to provide that space for faculty and students during Spring 2021. 

Starting Friday February 26th at noon, Dr. Cynthia Baur of the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy and other UMD faculty and students will meet for biweekly virtual "teach-ins" or education and discussion sessions about the events of 2020, including the U.S. elections, racial justice protests, and the coronavirus pandemic.  

As a group, we will try to understand how each of these events became so divisive, how we look for or are exposed to information on controversial topics, and how we come to form our beliefs. We hope attendees will walk away with a greater understanding of the context of each event, insight into their own information seeking habits, and steps for how to take action in your own life or community. 

Sessions: noon-1 PM through Canvas (Drop-in ok but we must pre-register you for the session you want to attend) 

  • Feb. 26: Kicking off the conversation on beliefs, information, and what it means to be informed  
  • March 12: Coronavirus pandemic
  • March 26: Racial justice protests
  • April 9: 2020 elections and aftermath
  • April 23: Reflection and next steps
