The Maryland Center for Health Equity (M-CHE), is co-sponsoring a community-based "health promotion expo" in Hyattsville, Md. on Monday, June 18 which will offer free health screenings and wellness information, as well as free fresh produce (and haircuts!) to those who attend. The "Community Place Café Health Promotion Expo" is being organized by the Community Ministry of Prince George's County, in partnership with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Officers Foundation and the School of Public Health's M-CHE. The Community Ministry of Prince George's County runs the Community Place Café out of Hyattsville's First United Methodist Church to support homeless people in the area by providing free lunches four days a week. This ministry partners with the school's Center for Health Equity on projects to help meet human service needs and reduce health disparities throughout Prince George's County, Maryland. Together they have organized this health expo to serve the Hyattsville community and to engage public health professionals working for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Many of the Corps' 6,000 members will be in town for the USPHS annual conference being held at the University of Maryland (June 19-21) and will provide critical health screening services at the health expo event. The Governor's Wellmobile, the Prince George's County Health Department, and the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Maryland will also participate in this bi-lingual English and Spanish event.

The free screening and wellness services available will include blood pressure check, asthma education, mental wellness, body mass index assessments, foot health, and nutrition education. The Café Health Expo will also offer free haircuts through "Barbershop on Call," and a free bicycle checkup. Community Ministry is asking local churches and community organizations to invite anyone who lacks health insurance and to provide transportation as needed to those who can benefit from this free event.
