Generous Gift Advances the SPH Global Health Initiative
A generous gift from the Cohen-Schwartz family will help to grow the Global Health Initiative in the School of Public Health.
Robb Cohen graduated from the University of Maryland in 1985 with a degree in finance, and has spent his career in the healthcare industry. Additionally, Robb’s wife Gail Schwartz (a glaucoma specialist), and their two daughters have special interests in public health, including global health. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cohen, their oldest daughter, is a Public Health Science major and is also part of the Global Public Health Scholars program.
To commemorate the family’s overall belief in the importance of the SPH, and to support the school during Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland, Cohen and his wife Dr. Gail Schwartz have made a $100,000 major gift to the Global Public Health Fund. The gift will help to build education, research and service programs in support of communities around the globe—one of Dean Boris Lushniak’s strategic priorities.
In recognition of the gift from the Cohen-Schwartz family, the School of Public Health has named a space in the building in their honor. The Robb Cohen & Gail Schwartz Collaboratorium is a computer lab and meeting space where students can receive tutoring on statistical software and techniques and utilize the space for collaborative meetings for group projects and presentations. The room also has a webcam and large screen for practicing presentations or hosting small groups.
The Robb Cohen & Gail Schwartz Collaboratorium is located on the second floor of the School of Public Health Building, near the Public Health Science undergraduate program office.
In addition to their latest gift to the SPH, the Cohen-Schwartz family has also given to the Mid-Maryland Mission of Mercy, Maryland Hillel, the Maryland Cybersecurity Center, and to the START Center. The following video about their support for the University of Maryland was featured at the October 12 UM Philanthropy Society event. They are members of all four societies: Flagship (lifetime giving of $250K+), Legacy (estate gift), Loyalty (give annually) and Leadership (over $2500 annually).
