Rachel Rosenberg Goldstein specializes in environmental health with a focus on environmental microbiology, water quality testing (specifically wastewater and reclaimed water), and environmental communication. Rachel received a Ph.D. in Toxicology and Environmental Health and an M.P.H. in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Maryland, as well as a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to completing her graduate degrees, Rachel worked as an Environmental Communications Specialist consulting with the US EPA to provide communications and data management services for voluntary partnership programs.

Rachel’s research interests include water quality, foodborne illness, and promoting environmental literacy. Her research goals focus on maintaining water quality in the State of Maryland and making relevant water research accessible and understandable. Current and past research projects include: 1) evaluating wastewater and reclaimed water used for spray irrigation for the presence of bacterial pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria using culture and molecular techniques; 2) determining associations between environmental and community-level factors and bacteria associated with food and waterborne illness; and 3) conducting private well water clinics in Maryland to assess private well owners’ knowledge about well maintenance and well water quality and analyze the chemical and biological quality of well water samples.

Rachel is currently the Co-Project Director for the Extension Activity with CONSERVE (COordinating Nontraditional Sustainable watER Use in Variable climatEs): A Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food, and Health project. She manages the CONSERVE Extension team activities including a needs assessment on nontraditional water knowledge, concerns, and outreach methods.
