Reflection Circle and Discussion on Racial Trauma and Healing facilitated by Beth Douthirt Cohen, Ph.D., School of Public Health and Jeanette Snider, Ph.D. Assistant Research Professor, Social Justice Alliance and Anti-Black Racism Initiative. 

This hour-long reflection circle is part of a full day teach-in, A Day of Black History: Stories of Empowerment and Justice, led by the School of Public Policy. 

This February the 22nd, as we focus on the significance of Black History Month, the School of Public Policy warmly invites you to a dynamic and inspiring teach-in like no other! Get ready to dive deep into the rich tapestry of the Black experience in the USImage removed.This year, we embrace this year's theme "African Americans and the Arts" and more. This day of community engagement is not just a teach-in; it's a heartfelt invitation to engage, question, and celebrate the multifaceted experiences and contributions of the Black community. From wellness to education policy, and the race and food culture as well social media and criminal justice, each session is crafted to inspire, inform, and foster a deeper sense of community and understanding. Please mark your calendars and bring your curiosity and your insights. 

Event Schedule:

10:30 am: Kick off the day with a warm Introduction with UMD ARHU Dean Stephanie Shonekan

11:00 am: Dive into Lessons in Black History

12:00 pm: Join Simone Warrick-Bell, the Graduate Academic Counselor, for a Wellness and Self-care Session. This lunchtime gathering offers a moment of reflection and rejuvenation, emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional well-being. Please RSVP for lunch if you will be joining us through this link.    

1:00 pm: Engage with Psyche Williams-Forson, Ph.D., Professor & chair of the Department of American Studies, in a thought-provoking discussion on Race, Culture, and Food Policy. 

2:00 pm: Explore Street Violence in the Era of Social Media with Brooklynn Hitchens, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

3:00 pm: Reflection Circle and Discussion on Racial Trauma and Healing, Beth Douthirt Cohen, Ph.D., School of Public Health and Jeanette Snider, Ph.D. Assistant Research Professor, Social Justice Alliance and Anti-Black Racism Initiative 

4:00 pm: Delve into Race and Education Policy with Curtis Valentine, Director at the Progressive Policy Institute and Lecturer at UMD School of Public Policy. 

5:00 pmJoin us, along with fellow faculty and students, as the Black Students in Public Policy (BSIPP) host an engaging Terp Table Talk event for Black History Month. Together, we'll explore and discuss important social and cultural issues within the Black community (refreshments will be provided).
