Undergraduate Center for Academic Success and Achievement: Mandatory Advising

Academic Probation

• Students will be placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
• Students who have earned 60 cumulative credits or more will be dismissed from the University in the event their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 at the end of their probationary semester.
• Students who are on Academic Probation and have fewer than 60 cumulative credits will be permitted to continue enrolling at the University if a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 is achieved in each semester of probation.
• Students who are on probation and attain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the end of a Winter or Summer term will not be subject to dismissal in the subsequent semester.

Academic Dismissal

• The Student Success Office will notify students via email if they are dismissed. The email will include a statement that registration for the next semester (excluding winter or summer term) will be canceled.
• Students who are dismissed from the University should speak with the Academic Probation Advisor to discuss options for reinstating. 
• Students can reinstate by taking a winter/summer course and attain a cumulative GPA of 2.0, or by submitting an application for reinstatement through the Student Success Office.

All students in the School of Public Health on Academic Probation are required to meet with an SPH Probation Advisor prior to the end of Schedule Adjustment or be registered for SPHL246 Terp Restoration.

All students on Academic Probation will have a registration block. Students will be unable to adjust their schedule without the permission of an SPH Probation Advisor. This block will remain in effect for the entirety of the probationary semester. Students will need permission for each adjustment on their schedule (add/drop/withdraw).

This course is designed to assist students in improving academic skills, learning time management practices, interacting with the faculty and greater campus community, and developing professional career aspirations. The focus will be on an exploration of the academic environment, campus resources, self-discovery tools, and skill development. Utilizing an interactive experience through facilitated discussion that develops positive relationships, students will actively explore academic opportunities offered through the School of Public Health and the University of Maryland.

Restriction: Students must be undergraduate majors within the School of Public Health; and permission of instructor.
