9/11 Then and Now: Renewing a Commitment to Service, Volunteerism and Civic Engagement

11:00AM-12:15PM EDT
9 11 lights in New York

This year commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11. A cross-disciplinary panel will discuss the impact of the 9/11 attacks and link our knowledge and understanding to present day events. Panelists will reflect on this historical event and re-engage within the current context of the identity based, geopolitical issues (e.g. the murders of George Floyd and other people of color, the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Afghanistan and the US withdrawal after 20 years) while emphasizing the importance of the legacy of service that came out of this significant time of loss and change for the US and the world.

As we mark this date, we are highlighting the legislative establishment of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance that friends and family members championed to honor the people who lost their lives. We are calling for a recommitment to a lifetime of military, national and public service, volunteerism and civic engagement.

Sponsored by the UMD Cross-Campus Civic Engagement Working Group, College of Education, School of Public Health, School of Public Policy, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and University Chaplains
