Title: Application of Action Research Perspectives and Methods to Community Based and Participatory Research

Virtual session February 24, 2022 at 1pm ET. Register for the event Here

The Global U21 HREx led by UMD and Dr. Negin Fouladi will host a session by Dr. Arthur Hernandez on the application of Action Research (AR) perspectives and methods to Community Based and Participatory(CBPR) Research.  Action research approaches to CBPR require a focus on “people” rather than “problem” and intend to generate community-based actionable knowledge as the first objective (rather than or solely “academic” knowledge).  This requires a reorientation to the research paradigm, the recognition of and appreciation for the “expertise of experience,” a willingness to pursue emergent learning rather than a priori structured learning and changes the position of the community from “informants” to co-researchers and co-learners.  Session participants will explore the conceptual basis for and application of AR methodology to CBPR, address some of the constraints of this type of inquiry, and consider its ethical implications including IRB and the issue of Social Justice.

Arthur E. Hernández, Ph.D., NCSP, NCC is Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word and has broad and diverse training in clinical and educational psychology, curriculum and instruction and evaluation. He currently serves on the Leaders in Equitable Evaluation and Diversity (LEEAD) advisory board, is the Director of the American Evaluation Association’s (AEA) Minority Serving Institution initiative and a member of the International Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation. Dr. Hernández has served as lead and co-investigator on numerous research and teaching projects funded locally, philanthropically, and by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute of Dental Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Education and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.  Over the course of his career, his writing and research has focused on measurement and evaluation, health and wellness, psycho-educational interventions, and teaching effectiveness.  His recent focus is on identifying, describing, and ameliorating disparities in health, education and wellness focusing on culturally responsive and equitable methodology.
