SGDLC
The SGDLC Training Workshop walks participants through terminology, language, concepts about gender and sex, as well as tools to provide affirming mental healthcare. This 7-hour training workshop is for individual practitioners as well as administrative providers.

Location: Virtual

The University of Maryland Prevention Research Center is committed to addressing gaps in understanding LGBTQ+ mental health care and improving outcomes for LGBTQ+ persons. Choosing the SGDLC Training Workshop means choosing a learning experience that is both research and practice based, enhancing one's knowledge and skills around mental health practice and LGBTQ+ competency. The SGDLC was developed by a team of researchers and clinicians to introduce healthcare providers to basic concepts related to LGBTQ+ mental health and wellness, preparing them to serve LGBTQ+ clients competently. The SGDLC is intended to be delivered to behavioral healthcare providers, including (but not limited to) mental health professionals and drug and alcohol counselors, and medical professionals and drug and alcohol counselors, and medical professionals such as physicians, medical assistants, and nurses. 

The SGDLC Training Workshop walks participants through terminology, language, and concepts about gender and sex, as well as tools to provide affirming mental healthcare, individually or administratively. This virtual 7-hour workshop is an interactive space led by our expert facilitators to engage in intentional and thoughtful conversations on becoming affirming LGBTQ+ practitioners and organizations. 

Overall Workshop Learning Objectives: 

1. Improve mental healthcare providers' knowledge about LGBTQ+ health disparities and affirmative mental health services for LGBTQ+ people. 

2. Improve mental healthcare providers' comfort and confidence with providing LGBTQ+ affirmative mental healthcare and facilitating sexual health conversations. 

3. Improve mental healthcare providers' skill and ability with providing LGBTQ+ affirmative mental healthcare and facilitating sexual health conversations.

Agenda for SGDLC Training Workshop

  • Module 1: Interrogating Stereotypes, Examining Comfort, and Understanding the Importance of Language
  • Module 2: LGBTQ+ Health Disparities and Obstacles to Care
  • Module 3: Integrating Sexual Health into Behavioral Health Care
  • Module 4: Providing Affirmative Care and Sexual Health Conversations
