UMD SPH Academic Affairs, sponsored by the Office of the Dean, is hosting T.E.R.P.S. for Terps, a comprehensive suicide awareness and prevention training. This is an in-person event, to be held in our Friedgen Family Seminar Room. Participation is limited to 50 registrants.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in our country. Chances are high that we each know someone who has been impacted by it. We strongly encourage all faculty, staff, and students to take advantage of this offering.
This training is designed to help you:
- Learn how to manage your own anxieties and fears when responding to a suicidal student
- Learn how to effectively listen to, talk with, and relate/respond to a student in suicidal crisis
- Enhance empathy, communication skills, self-awareness, and overall ability to communicate with people experiencing mental health concerns
- Increase comfort being a front line responder who is able to identify and support students in crisis and refer them to mental health resources when necessary
