Let’s Clear the Air: Build a DIY Air Filter to Make Indoor Spaces Safer

Members of the School of Public Health’s PHABlab will show you how to build your own air filter, called a “Corsi-Rosenthal” box, that is highly effective at filtering infectious virus particles, like those that cause COVID-19, from the air! It is a science-based and easy way to make indoor spaces safer and healthier for all! Learn how to build your own and enter a drawing to win one of these air purifiers built by students in the UMD School of Public Health!

Meet members from the Public Health Beyond Borders student group who’ve participated in projects in India, Peru and Sierra Leone. They will demonstrate workshops on topics including hand-washing, first aid and nutrition that they have shared with global partner communities.

Stop the Bleed Training

Do you know how to prevent someone from losing their life due to life-threatening bleeding? The National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health helps prepare and educate the public on how to stop life-threatening bleeding using the Stop the Bleed educational tools they developed. Stop by and learn how to apply a limb tourniquet using a mannequin leg.

Understanding the Water Cycle to Protect our Food and Health

Researchers from the CONSERVE Center of Excellence will demonstrate how the water cycle works and why it is important to reuse and recycle water to protect public health and our planet. Adults can calculate their water footprint and kids can craft a bracelet demonstrating their knowledge of the water cycle. Little ones can learn about water reuse through a whimsical coloring book. Bonus: There will be swag for kids and adults who participate!

Gymkana Performance

Don’t miss this outdoor performance by the School of Public Health’s Gymkana Troupe. As one of the longest-running student groups at UMD (established in 1946!), Gymkana is known for their fun, gravity-defying, high-flying gymnastic and acrobatic shows. But their mission goes beyond fun - they are dedicated to promoting active, healthy choices through their performances and youth gymnastics programs.
