As the coronavirus outbreak continues to expand around the world, and definitive answers trail behind rising numbers of diagnosed cases, a School of Public Health symposium yesterday sought to shed some light on the emerging disease, its impact and the steps being taken to contain it and ultimately stop it.

College Park, MD — The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today unveiled that the University of Maryland has one of the highest-scoring proposals, designated as the Top 100, in its 100&Change competition for a single $100 million grant to help solve one of the world's most critical social challenges. 

It’s possible the coronavirus can be spread by aerosol transmission, environmental health professor Donald Milton told The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) in a recent article. 

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics will host the first UMD Big Data in Public Health conference on February 28, 2020. The event is free and open to all interested in learning more about collaborations using big data methods to advance public health.

Anna Posbergh, kinesiology PhD candidate at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, received a grant to explore the “science” of fair play and medicalized ideas of fairness in sports policy, particularly relating to transgender eligibility and gender-verification processes from the Olympics Studies Centre. 

The grant will fund a month-long stay in Lausanne, Switzerland, during which Posbergh will pursue archival research at the Olympic Studies Centre.

Especially her father, Arthur Rudy '40.

Having lost his own father when he was just a year old, Arthur and his three young siblings were raised by a mother who had limited opportunities but highly valued education. And when he reached college age, Arthur had to delay going for several years due to a lack of resources.

When he finally got to Maryland, he got by with the help of scholarships and several jobs.
