News from the School of Public Health

Climate change is known to be a contributing factor in a range of troubling health issues, from asthma to cardiovascular disease to foodborne outbreaks. New research from the University of Maryland School of Public Health examined the impacts of air pollution and extreme heat related to climate change on people undergoing dialysis, also known as end stage kidney disease patients.

Michael Brown PhD ’95 joined the School of Public Health as the new chair of the Department of Kinesiology on January 3, 2022. 

Andrew Anderson PhD '19 was named to the journal Health Affairs' inaugural Health Equity Fellowship Trainees (HEFT) cohort.

Ben Prescott '08, assistant director for Gymkana and SPH interim facilities manager, and wife Angie Prescott '06, assistant coach for Gymkana, prioritize self care and positive thinking in their parenting and everyday activities.

Greg and Kimberly Pappas have established the Emily Pappas '22 Family Maryland Promise Scholarship with a  $125,000 gift in honor of their daughter Emily. It will support undergraduate kinesiology students in the School of Public Health, with preference given to students from underrepresented populations, low-income and first-generation college students. 

The UMD Global STEWARDS Graduate Training Program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) National Research Traineeship (NRT) program, welcomed its fourth cohort of doctoral students at a welcome event on Friday December 3, 2021.
