SPH Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-Racist (DEIA) Workshop for Faculty: Creating an Inclusive and Anti-Racist Classroom

Location: Online - Zoom

SPH tenured, professional track, and adjunct faculty, as well as GAs who teach, are invited to a DEIA workshop led by Louisa Nkrumah, a Learning Experience Designer with the University of Maryland Teaching and Learning Center.

Date 1: Tuesday, November 16 | 3:30 — 5:00 PM EST

Date 2: Tuesday, February 8 | 3:30 — 5:00 PM EST

The course will focus on:

  • Course design considerations, including accessibility and universal design for learning
  • Inclusive language
  • Specific strategies to emphasize the importance of inclusivity and diversity in our courses
  • Anti-racist principles and practices for curriculum


  • Foundational presentation 
  • Breakout rooms with discussions of classroom implementations
  • Case studies, and scenarios
  • Breakout rooms for debriefing and questions
  • A post-session reflection/task to keep people engaged and prepared for Session 2 in the Spring semester

This DEIA programming is a part of our larger TerrapinSTRONG effort towards creating an inclusive environment where every member of our community feels that they belong and are empowered to reach their full potential. This includes deconstructing racism as unintentionally practiced in the classroom, including the curriculum and in/formal communications.
