Location: Zoom

Talk Description: Measurements for provider competency with LGBTQ+ populations most often rely on quantitative methods. However, qualitative methods can provide insights that quantitative methods are unable to provide. But qualitative methods often require more hours dedicated to analysis. In this talk, Dr. Gandy will discuss her experience in using both methods and offer considerations for measurement design.

The UMD-PRC Seminar Series is our internal-facing educational opportunity for those in the UMD community looking to learn more about LGBTQ+ related research. Keep an eye out for our webinar series, which is external-facing and geared more towards LGBTQ+ mental health related practice!

Speaker: Dr. Megan Gandy

Megan E. Gandy is an Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University School of Social Work. She earned her PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she created a measure of LGBTQ-youth-related cultural competence in direct care mental health providers called the Queer Youth Cultural Competency (QYCC) scale. Her primary research interest is in the well-being of LGBTQ+ people, focusing on aspects that contribute to it and detract from it. Of particular interest is mental health provider competency, healthcare access, and faith community support.
