This week Fortune magazine named the University of Maryland School of Public Health’s online master’s in public health program the best in the nation for 2025.

The ranking was based on factors including first-year retention, affordability and accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health. The evaluation was also based on consultation with experts across major public health organizations. Along with smaller classes of about 25 students per core online MPH course, Fortune cited SPH’s membership in the Universitas 21 Health Research Exchange, a global network where students can collaborate to build a better understanding of – and ideas for – health systems around the world.

“This ranking underscores our mission to equip future public health leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in communities around the world,” said SPH Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Jennifer Bachner. “We are honored to be recognized as Fortune Education's top online Master's in Public Health program, which we attribute to our unwavering commitment to excellence in public health education. The success of our students reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff and students to creating a rigorous and supportive learning experience.”

The School of Public Health offers a wide array of undergraduate and advanced degrees, including in-person and online MPH programs. Students develop expertise to take on climate change, community health, mental health, the science of physical activity, health policy, health disparities and prepare for dozens of in-demand career paths, learning from faculty actively working to solve the public health issues most affecting our communities and our world.

“We’ve long known that our University of Maryland School of Public Health students, faculty and staff are shining stars in their field - both academically and in their commitment to bettering health, and it’s wonderful to see that reflected in Fortune’s No. 1 ranking for our online MPH,” said SPH Dean Dr. Boris Lushniak. “Whether online or in person, we provide a premier education that enables our diverse student body to develop the knowledge, abilities and confidence to take on the greatest challenges in public health and to succeed.”
