Network and engage: SPH's annual Career Expo is coming Nov. 13!

SPH career event

The annual fall Public Health Career Expo will take place on Nov. 13 from 1-3 p.m., giving students  an opportunity to network and discover internship and career opportunities to help kick-start their careers.

The Public Health Career Expo is our signature exposure event,” said Jodi Hammer, program director for the University Career Center at SPH. “Unlike the more formal traditional career fair where employers come to promote current job vacancies and students bring resumes to distribute, our Expo enables a more informal opportunity for our students to connect with participating organizations to learn more about their work, mission, values and possible internships among other opportunities.”

This year, about 30 employers will be attending, with representation from each of the majors within public health. Employers include: Maryland Department of Health, Johns Hopkins Suburban Hospital, Kennedy Krieger behavioral/counseling, Equinox and Adventist Healthcare. A list of all approved employers can be found on Handshake

“This event is a great opportunity for SPH students to connect and interact with participating employers to learn more about organizations working in the many facets of public health. Students can identify internships of interest as well, and our familiar SPH environment can be less intimidating than the larger traditional career fairs,” Hammer said. It's a fun event with great energy! Don’t miss out on it.”

Tips for the Career Expo

  1. Come for as long as you can.
  2. Try to visit most/or all the tables, if only to say thank you for attending. You never know where networking can occur!
  3. Prep for presenting your informed self: Before you attend, research the organizations and write down a few questions. Be sure to ask smart questions, including those that can't be answered easily online.
  4. Get a business card whenever possible or ask for a representative’s email. Then follow up with them! This will set you apart from the masses that don't.
  5. Make a networking spreadsheet for contacts made at this and other events.  Add to it, including contact info and venue to keep yourself organized as you may forget if not.
  6. Remember, it is never too early to start looking for internships and future jobs. Get started as soon as possible!

Hammer will facilitate a virtual Tips to Prepare for the Public Health Career Expo on Friday, Nov. 8, from noon to 1 p.m., with guidance followed by a 30 minute Q&A.
