Amanda Hemmer is a Senior Health Care Consultant at Guidehouse, Inc., a global consulting firm providing services to public and commercial clients. She works within the company’s Healthcare Strategy segment and partners with commercial clients, including hospitals and health systems going through transformational change.

In the first in a series of articles on Healthy People 2030, Dushanka Kleinman, Nico Pronk and colleagues introduce the foundational principle that "the health and well-being of all people and communities are essential to a thriving, equitable society." The article Promoting Health and Well-being in Healthy People 2030, published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, describes how Healthy People 2030 continues the Healthy People initiative’s tradition of serving as a catalyst for action by expanding the focus of health promotion to promoting health and well-being.

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly altered the research field, leading to institutions struggling to keep career development connections and networks. The virus may also contribute to increasing the research divide, specifically for underrepresented Early Career Researchers (ECR’s) and doctoral students. 

Racial and ethnic groups who are underrepresented in Health Management, Services and Policy fields tend to face unique obstacles when it comes to career success. 

Robb Cohen ‘85 and Gail Schwartz believe in the power of a college education. They believe that it’s a transformative experience that offers students a chance to pursue new opportunities, communities and life paths. 

“A college degree offers technical knowledge and opens doors, but also, the whole college experience is one that contributes to independence and advances social equity,” said Robb. “We believe it should be accessible to all,” added Gail.

In medical research, diversity matters. It is key to equity in health promotion, health care delivery and treatment. 

However, the health care field continues to struggle to recruit African Americans for research studies, according to a new journal article from Health Policy and Management Professor Stephen Thomas.
