In January of 2024, SPH’s Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education, Dr. Nicole Cousin-Gossett, embarked on a transformative journey to confront systemic and institutional racism.

On Friday, Feb. 23, a pool of 16 leaders gathered at the Reservoir Center for Water Solutions with the purpose of bringing together powerful leaders and shaping the next generation of changemakers in public health. The leaders — all women of color in public health careers — discussed water solutions, letting flow a river of ideas and expertise. The panelists represented diverse skill sets and backgrounds united by their commitment to social justice, environmental health and clean water.

The School of Public Health (SPH) Alumni Network awarded the Public Health Emerging and Engaging Leaders (PHEEL) Award, to four outstanding recent graduates in April 2024. Each honoree was selected for their excellence in their career progression, service and leadership.

The honorees include Deanna Barath, PhD ’22, Fabian Doñate, MHA '20, Kimberly Stinchcomb, MPH '16, Monique Thornton, '13 (Community Health).

This summer, the University of Maryland will partner with Ohio State University to launch LiFEsports, a nationally acclaimed summer camp for children ages 9 through 14 from low-income families.
