The University of Maryland Emerita/Emeritus Association (UMEEA) Steering Committee recently elected Dr. Elaine A. Anderson to serve a three-year term. UMEEA is a membership organization open to all retired faculty with emeritus or like Dr. Anderson, emerita status.

UMEEA encourages and facilitates the continued involvement of retired faculty with the university, identifies and advances the continuing intellectual interests and scholarly activities of UMEEA members, offers a range of programs on topics of interest, provides information about issues of concern, and acts as a focal point for social interaction, intellectual exchange, and the cultural enrichment among our members. As a member of the UMEEA Steering Committee, Dr. Anderson works with the Program Committee to identify, organize, structure and implement a variety of programs or initiatives for Emerita/Emeritus faculty at UMD. The Committee attempts to offer at least 3 different programs a semester for the faculty.

When asked about being a part of the UMEEA Steering Committee, Dr. Anderson stated, “I am excited to work with other faculty who have a long history with the University as we attempt to support programmatic initiatives to enhance the well-being of other retired Emerita/Emeritus faculty and to engage retired faculty in newly developing university initiatives.  It is an honor for me to work with such esteemed professionals”.

This fall semester 2020 the Committee held a 'fireside chat" with Dr. Darryl Pines to hear about his initiatives as the new UMD President and to begin to discuss his thoughts on how Emerita/Emeritus faculty can be useful to the University.  The Committee is also hosting a panel session for recently retired or soon-to-be-retired faculty and offers tips on what to do to be ready for and respond to this major life transition. Finally, they will be hosting a session in honor of the passage of the women's vote, that highlights some of the major changes that have occurred for women in the past 100 years.

Congratulations, Dr. Elaine Anderson!
