Every year during Giving Day, the University of Maryland School of Public Health community rallies in support of our research initiatives, scholarships, educational programs and public health practice activities. On Wednesday, March 9, 2022, this year’s Giving Day saw 296 donors—alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends—come together to raise a total of $218,663!
This effort reflected a nearly seven percent increase in the number of donors from last year and placed the School of Public Health at #4 on the leaderboard for the most funds raised across the University of Maryland during Giving Day. We were #1 on the Group 2 leaderboard, which includes Hillel, Office of Undergraduate Studies, College of Education, Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
The most popular funds included the Public Health Grand Challenges, the Student Emergency Scholarship, Gymkana and “Your Choice.”
Thanks to generous gifts from our community, we met our target for the Dollar Challenge posed by Research Professor Emerita Dr. Pamela I. Clark, who donated $100,000 when the School of Public Health reached $100,000 in donations.
We were also able to unlock challenge funds for hitting targets for the number of alumni, faculty/staff and overall donors from Former Dean Dr. Jane E. Clark and Dr. Jill Whitall; Founding Dean Dr. Robert S. Gold and Mrs. Barbara A. Gold and Dean Boris Lushniak and Dr. Patricia Cusumano. From these generous challenges, we received an additional $15,000!
Beyond donations, we won $300 from the university for the #Igave and #GivingDayUMD prizes thanks to an Instagram post by Ben Prescott, the assistant director of Gymkana and a Tweet by Hannah Tralka, a faculty research assistant with the UMD Prevention Research Center!
Additionally, a heartfelt LinkedIn post by Monica Schmude, a member of our Dean’s Council, further inspired our community to act.
We are thankful for everyone who participated in Giving Day. The support we’ve received will help us continue to tackle the public health grand challenges of our time, including the coronavirus pandemic, systemic racism and climate change. And with our community, we will continue to invest in the future of public health by training and supporting the next generation of the public health workforce!
