Two faculty members from the School of Public Health, Shannon Jette and Elizabeth Aparicio, received Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year awards from the University of Maryland Graduate School.
"This award recognizes faculty members who have made exceptional contributions to a student’s (or students’) graduate experience," said Steve Fetter, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School. "This award serves the dual purposes of acknowledging outstanding mentoring provided by individual faculty and of reminding the university community of the importance of mentoring to graduate studies."
Shannon Jette is an associate professor of kinesiology and the director of the MPH in Physical Activity program. Elizabeth Aparicio is an assistant professor of behavioral and community health and member of the UMD-PRC. Both were nominated by students in a letter describing their engagement with students and how they provided opportunities for students to develop skills and reach their goals.
This year, the award received nominations from 216 graduate students for 30 faculty mentors, from which ten faculty were named Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year. These selections were made from a campus-wide committee comprised of graduate faculty and students.
