Professor, Kinesiology

Dr. David L. Andrews is a Professor within the Physical Cultural Studies research group in the Department of Kinesiology. He is also an affiliate faculty member within the Department of American Studies and the Department of Sociology. He is currently working on a book titled "The Great Moving Right Show: Sport, Political Assemblages, and the Trump Awakening" (Rutgers University Press, forthcoming).

Dr. David L. Andrews is a Professor within the Physical Cultural Studies research group in the Department of Kinesiology. He is also an affiliate faculty member within the Department of American Studies and the Department of Sociology.

Born and raised in South-East London, England, Dr. Andrews was educated at the College of St. Mark & St. John (B.Ed[Hons]), England and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (M.S. and Ph.D.). Prior to his arrival at the University of Maryland in 2001, he taught at the University of Memphis.

Dr. Andrews' research interests center on contextualizing sport and physical culture in relation to the intersecting cultural, political, economic and technological forces shaping contemporary society.

His latest book is titled "Making Sport Great Again?: The Uber-Sport Assemblage, Neoliberalism, and the Trump Conjuncture" (Palgrave, 2019). Previous books include: "Sport-Commerce-Culture: Essays on Sport in Late Capitalist America (Peter Lang, 2006); Sport and Neoliberalism: Politics, Consumption, and Culture" (edited with Michael Silk, Temple University Press, 2012); "The Routledge Handbook of Physical Cultural Studies" (edited with Michael Silk and Holly Thorpe, Routledge, 2017); and, "Sport, Physical Culture, and the Moving Body: Materialisms, Technologies, Ecology" (edited with Joshua I. Newman, and Holly Thorpe, Rutgers University Press, 2020).

He is currently working on a book titled "The Great Moving Right Show: Sport, Political Assemblages, and the Trump Awakening" (Rutgers University Press, forthcoming).
