Ebbie Kalan, PhD

Ebbie Kalan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health and Director of the Artificial Intelligence for Research on Substance Use: Nicotine and Cannabis (AIRS) Lab. His research lies at the intersection of substance use, mental health, health equity, and emerging technologies. Through the AIRS Lab, Dr. Kalan investigates how generative artificial intelligence and other computational approaches can advance nicotine and cannabis research, strengthen health communication, and support public health interventions,, particularly for people with mental health conditions and other populations disproportionately affected by substance-related harms.

Dr. Kalan’s broader research examines disparities in tobacco and nicotine use and evaluates tobacco-control policies and communication strategies among youth, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other priority populations. His expertise includes behavioral and social epidemiology, population-health research, policy evaluation, health communication, and AI-assisted research methods. His interdisciplinary work spans individual-level studies and regional, national, and global epidemiological analyses, with the goal of developing effective interventions, reducing health disparities, and improving population health.
