Without smart policymaking, banning harmful chemicals like bisphenols and phthalates—common ingredients in plastics manufacturing—can result in a game of regulatory whack-a-mole where chemicals of similar toxicity or that have not been rigorously tested take their place.

The finding comes from a wide-ranging University of Maryland study published on Wednesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

This Giving Day on March 6, Terps showed up big for their school, raising the University of Maryland’s largest amount for this annual event: $4.22M. Nearly 10,000 people shared their support for UMD and its students, faculty, staff and programs by donating to more than 493 funds within the university, including many within the School of Public Health.

A University of Maryland public health researcher joined scholars from institutions worldwide to call for the retraction of four studies purporting to show damaging psychological effects of abortion, including one submitted as evidence in a decision overturning Roe v. Wade and now involved in a current Supreme Court case over availability of the abortion drug mifepristone.
