Alvin M. Powers is no stranger to hard work. A visionary leader in the healthcare industry, he built a legacy that extended far beyond business success. Powers dedicated his life to improving the lives of others, and with that, came an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. Upon his passing in November 2023 at age 89, his family and friends established the Alvin M.

Cole Hershman’s high school calculus teacher introduced “L'Hôpital's rule” by showing it featured in the movie “Mean Girls.” She pushed him and his classmates to take the hardest course they could before college to challenge themselves, and she was reliably in her classroom smiling whenever they needed advice.

Even now, as Hershman prepares to graduate from the University of Maryland as one of its top students, her adaptation of a Jiminy Cricket song title, “Always Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide,” is still floating around in his head.

In a new study published in Environmental Research Letters, an international team of investigators led by Professor Amir Sapkota offered a way to predict the risk of deadly diarrhea outbreaks using AI modeling, giving public health systems weeks or even months to prepare and to save lives.
