Principal Investigator

Headshot of the Principle Investigator, Sarah Kuzmiak-Glancy, PhD

Sarah Kuzmiak-Glancy

Sarah Kuzmiak-Glancy studies how mitochondrial energy production in skeletal and cardiac muscle is precisely matched to cellular energy demand, and how this coordination is altered during exercise and in disease. A lifelong athlete, she has merged her passion for sport with her scientific research. She earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology at Rutgers University and went on to complete her PhD at Arizona State University, where she became captivated by mitochondrial energetics.

Graduate Students

Headshot of PhD Student Shannon Khan

Shannon Khan

Shannon Khan a PhD student studying the effects of low-oxygen availability on structural and functional outcomes in the electron transport chain in cardiac mitochondria, with an overall interest in the underlying molecular mechanisms within mitochondria that may contribute to exercise intolerance in diabetes. As a non-traditional grad student, she holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Opera Performance, and served as Chief Operating Officer for Integrated Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics before deciding to return to school and pursue graduate research.  When not living at the lab, she chases the Buffalo Bills around the country with her husband and two pixie-bob cats.

Raya Arora

Raya Arora is a junior studying General Biology with a minor in General Business. Her career goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Nia Batoon

Nia Batoon is a Kinesiology major seeking a learning experience outside of the classroom. She is interested and enjoys being involved in research that closely aligns with her major.

Christopher Hart

Christopher Hart is a senior studying Biology. His goal is to attend medical school after graduation. Chris loves music, going to the gym, and spending time with friends.

Madeleine Hemming

Madeleine Hemming is a senior studying Kinesiology with plans to attend occupational therapy school. When she's not in the lab, she is usually in the gym weight lifting, hanging out with roommates, or hiking/walking outside.

Mitchell Lloyd

Mitchell Lloyd is a senior Kinesiology major and plans to attend graduate school to pursue a PhD in an exercise science related field.
