Congratulations to two University of Maryland School of Public Health students who are among the finalists for this year’s virtual Do Good Challenge: Sara Hatfield, a double major in behavioral and community health and family science, and Veeraj Shah, who is pursuing dual degrees in biological sciences and individual studies majoring in health policy and technology. 

Over 24 hours on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, the University of Maryland School of Public Health community came together virtually to support our research initiatives, scholarships and educational programs. 278 donors—alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students—gave a total of $220,724, an increase of more than 137 percent from the previous year. That placed the School of Public Health at #2 on the leaderboard after Athletics for most funds raised during Giving Day.

With COVID-19 dramatically demonstrating the need for a robust, well-funded and equity-focused public health system, a new $1.5 million gift to the University of Maryland School of Public Health (SPH) will support efforts to prepare a new generation of public health leaders—a diverse group ready to confront challenges ranging from disease pandemics to systemic racism, the climate crisis and more.  

Karen Shapiro is a Junior Policy Analyst intern for the Policy and Brain Health team at AARP. She has been conducting brain health research with a focus on brain health as people age. Shapiro has also published reports on women’s brain health and the impact of music on brain health.

Gabrielle Frohlich is the founder of an internship in partnership with the Victor Center Community Health Awareness (Education) Initiative (CHAI) at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. The initiative’s mission is to increase genomic literacy among and access to prenatal genetic testing for college communities and their campuses’ surrounding populations.

Meaghan McHugh earned a PhD in Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland's School of Public Health in the spring of 2018. She serves as Director of the Office of Evaluation at Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Rockville, Maryland. 

Shifali Mathews was part of the first class of students in the accelerated BS/MPH program. She completed her bachelor's in public health science in 2020 and earned her MPH in environmental health sciences in 2021. She is conducting climate change and health research with Dr. Amir Sapkota.

Briana Lockhart has worked with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Montgomery County, MD, since July 2018. She was originally hired as the Youth Program Coordinator, specializing in implementing an in-school suicide prevention program, Sources of Strength.

Bridgette Heine is a graduate assistant for the Teaching and Learning Center in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (CMNS). She is also a research assistant for Dr. Hongjie Liu in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Department, where she is working on two projects. The first is modeling Covid-19 in a university setting by looking at how different research groups have modeled Covid in other settings and then applying those later to a university setting.
