Terps like to say that they are “fearless”, always pushing “fearlessly forward”. For SPH Dean’s Council member Deborah Gebhardt, Ph.D. ’79, “fearless” means jumping into the action, not always knowing what lies ahead. This trailblazer has spent a lifetime breaking barriers and forging a path of excellence, from early days playing baseball alongside the boys in her Hazleton, Pennsylvania, neighborhood, to founding a company that regularly counsels leaders of the nation’s largest organizations.  

The School of Public Health (SPH) Alumni Network awarded the Public Health Emerging and Engaging Leaders (PHEEL) Award, to four outstanding recent graduates in April 2024. Each honoree was selected for their excellence in their career progression, service and leadership.

The honorees include Deanna Barath, PhD ’22, Fabian Doñate, MHA '20, Kimberly Stinchcomb, MPH '16, Monique Thornton, '13 (Community Health).

Chawin Reilly is a health policy analyst with the Maryland Department of Health. He works in the department’s Medicaid Provider Enrollment division, where he helps healthcare providers who serve the state’s Medicaid patients navigate the enrollment process. His team works directly with 110,000 providers, including individual physicians, hospitals and health systems in Maryland and neighboring states.

The University of Maryland Alumni Association will honor Alumni Alyssa T. Krumlauf, Ph.D. '15, with the Spirit of Maryland Award and Veeraj Shah '21 with the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award during its annual "A Celebration of Terps: Featuring The Maryland Awards" event on November 10, 2023 in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

Fate intervened in Jameson Roth's life when she stumbled upon a family science class at the School of Public Health. Get to know how Roth, president of the SPH Alumni Network, began her public health journey and the advice she has for public health students.

The Terrapin Club recently named Michelle Jamin '16, Elise Nguyen '17, '18 and Dominique Waddell '15 to its 30 Under 30 Class of 2023. The honor recognizes the SPH graduates' impact in their communities and careers while supporting the university and embodying Maryland Pride.

Horowitz, a research professor with the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, is a leading advocate and researcher in dental public health and health literacy efforts.

The School of Public Health community has lost a devoted alumna whose engagement with the University of Maryland has spanned decades and included many roles, most recently as an advisor to Dean Boris Lushniak as a member of the school’s Dean’s Council. Ayne Furman ’77 died on September 26, 2021 after a struggle with cancer. She was 64 years old.
