Dean Lushniak recently traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine to participate in an international health care summit. Along with the summit, he discussed the mood in the country’s capital and the three things he heard most from residents.
Boris D. Lushniak, dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health, has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Fitness Foundation by Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Beginning July 1, Dr. Tracy Zeeger will serve as Assistant Dean for Public Health Practice and Dr. Sylvette La Touche-Howard will serve as Assistant Dean for Community Engagement for the new Office of Public Health Practice and Community Engagement. With Dr. Zeeger and Dr. La Touche-Howard’s leadership, the School will expand opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain practical experiences in public health.
These are not normal times. On one public health front, we continue to struggle with COVID-19 infection rates, increasing deaths, and the implementation of a vaccination program. But public health action goes well beyond the response to an infectious disease pandemic.
The leadership of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) sent letters to President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on how presidential leadership can address the increasingly serious and complex public health issues facing the United States and the world.
