The University of Maryland School of Public Health held its first Big Data in Public Health conference on Feb. 28, with 202 attendees from 35 different institutions and organizations. 

In this year's conference, 10 speakers from different application areas of big data analytics—including social media, genomics and bioinformatics, health care, imaging and neuroscience—presented about their cutting edge research using big data and its connection with public health data science.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to expand around the world, and definitive answers trail behind rising numbers of diagnosed cases, a School of Public Health symposium yesterday sought to shed some light on the emerging disease, its impact and the steps being taken to contain it and ultimately stop it.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics will host the first UMD Big Data in Public Health conference on February 28, 2020. The event is free and open to all interested in learning more about collaborations using big data methods to advance public health.

Mary Jung is a long-time Terp, having earned three degrees at the University of Maryland, College Park: a BS in biological sciences, an MPH and PhD with a concentration in epidemiology.

On Wednesday May 22, thousands of faculty, staff, family and friends gathered to celebrate the 675 graduates of the School of Public Health at the UMD Xfinity Center. The SPH class of 2019 included 32 doctoral, 83 master's and 542 bachelor's recipients.

New research from the University of Maryland School of Public Health estimates that Hurricane Maria led to 1,205 "excess deaths" in Puerto Rico in September and October 2017.

Edward Grant received his Master of Public Health degree in 2013 with a concentration in biostatistics. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Edward earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical Biology from the University of Michigan. Edward serves as the Assistant Director of Biostatistics for DP Clinical Inc.

Assistant Professor Devon Payne-Sturges has been awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) K01 Career Development Award for a project focused on how combined exposure to environmental and social stressors affects child neurological development. The three-year grant from the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences totals more than $400,000.

The Spring 2018 SPH faculty and staff assembly included plenty of great news about school and department-level accomplishments, and laughter and good cheer during the faculty and staff awards.

Dean Boris Lushniak spoke warmly about this being the culmination of the SPH ten-year anniversary celebration, highlighting the various celebrations that happened over the course of the academic year. He noted that the SPH commencement ceremony, happening this Saturday, May 19th, will mark the end of our anniversary year and the start of our second decade.
