Frequently Asked Questions About Shots at the Shop

Shots at the Shop is a White House-backed collaboration between the University of Maryland’s Maryland Center for Health Equity, the Black Coalition Against COVID, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) ​​​​​​, and the beauty and personal care brand SheaMoisture to recruit 1,000 Black-owned barbershops and hair salons nationwide to assist African Americans in making informed COVID related decisions, overcome misinformation and increase COVID-19 vaccinations.

The project is a priority of the White House COVID-19 Response Team.

So far, more than 700 barbers and stylists have signed up to participate!

All barbers and stylists across the US are invited to join the Shots at the Shop program in these five steps:

  1. Step One: Register
    Please note that registration is currently closed and businesses can request to be waitlisted for the next funding cycle at sheamoisture.community@gmail.com. If you have already registered, please complete the next steps outlined here.

  2. Step Two: Attend or Watch the Orientation
    The orientation will introduce barbers and stylists to the program and clarify next steps.

  3. Step Three: Complete the Training (and Receive a Certificate)
    The training involves completing training modules on your own time (~2.5 hours) taught by national public health and medical experts and other participating barbers and stylists. Watch the instructions for how to enroll in the course >

  4. Step Four: Host a Vaccine Event (and Take Pictures)
    Find details about hosting a vaccine event in the section below and the "Details on Hosting a Vaccine Event" section of the main Shots at the Shop webpage. Assistance from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is available to help you connect with your local health department to organize an on-site vaccination clinic.   5. Step Five: Complete the Certificate and Event Upload Form
    In order to receive your $1000 grant, you must complete SheaMoisture's Certificate and Event Upload Form where you will be asked to upload your training certificate and vaccine event information.

All steps must be completed by Thursday, September 30th. Those who do not complete the process by September 30th will be moved to the waitlist. 

Barbershops and salons can hold the following types of events to qualify for the $1000 grant from SheaMoisture:

  • Holding a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic with a Clinical Partner inside your barbershop or salon.
  • Hosting a mobile COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic with a Clinical Partner outside or near your barbershop or salon.

We have made it easy and convenient for you to partner with your local public health department which can connect you with a clinical partner and provide access to trained professionals who are experienced and eager to come to your shop and organize a vaccination event with you in a convenient and friendly way. The organization NACCHO (the National Association County and City Health Officials) will assist in making connections to clinical providers in your local area who will be able to provide vaccines and education in your shop.

After completing the five steps outlined in the "How do I participate and what is expected?," section above, you will receive $1000. Businesses can expect to receive funds after July 21st.

The total training includes:

The training is based upon the Health Advocates In-Reach and Research (HAIR) campaign, a culturally tailored, community-based intervention developed by UMD Center for Health Equity Director Stephen B. Thomas, PhD, that transforms barbershops and beauty salons into culturally relevant portals for health education and the delivery of public health and medical services.

The total training will not take more than 4 hours to complete. This includes the orientation (~1.5 hours) and the training modules (~2.5 hours). 

Once you have completed the orientation, you can enroll and complete the training modules on your own time (~2.5 hours) taught by national public health and medical experts and other participating barbers and stylists. At the end of the training, you will receive a certificate, please save this certificate.​​​​​​​ Watch the instructions for how to enroll in the course.
