Peace Corps Prep Program Work Sector Requirements

Leveraging concrete knowledge and skills is central to on-the-ground international development work. Through this Peace Corps Prep program, you will begin to build a professional specialty, which should serve your career well whether or not you become a Peace Corps Volunteer.

 

Students applying to the Peace Corps Prep program will choose one work sector in which Peace Corps volunteers work and complete at least 3 courses and 50 hours of related experience.

Choose 3 Courses and Earn a Grade of C- or Higher:
  • TLPL 440: Issues in the Education of English Language Learners
  • EDHD 320: Human Development through the Lifespan
  • ENGL 234: African American Literature and Culture
  • TLPL 288R: Critical Race Counter Storytelling
  • HLTH 431: Health Literacy in Action
  • HLTH 420: Effective Strategies for Public Health Practice
  • Study abroad opportunities include:

  • Teaching in one of these or a similar form: in a classroom, with a community outreach organization, or in a formal tutoring capacity
    • The subject of the teaching may be English as a Foreign/Second Language, special education, drama, or a STEM subject
  • Participation in Maryland Mentor Corps
  • Volunteer with America Reads, America Counts, or Partners in Print
  • Intern with the Center for Young Children or Friends Community School
  • Study abroad and complete an internship with Maryland in Barcelona (EDCP 386) or Maryland in Sevilla (SPAN 386)
  • Study abroad and complete an independent study project with SIT Study Abroad Chile-Comparative Education and Social Change

  • Volunteer or work experience in such areas as HIV/AIDS outreach, hospice, family planning counseling, emergency medical technician (EMT) or CPR teaching/certification, maternal health, and hands-on caregiving in a hospital, clinic, or lab technician setting
  • Counseling or teaching in health subjects
  • Working as a resident advisor in a dormitory, as a peer nutritionist, or as a sexually transmitted infections counselor
  • Significant experience in mechanical repairs, construction, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, hydrology, or set design
  • Working as a Peer Educator with the University Health Center
  • Completing the capstone internship program in Community Health (HLTH 491)
  • Joining Eta Sigma Gamma and engaging in health education/public health service
  • Joining Public Health Beyond Borders and engaging in community service or going on a mission trip

  • Interning with the UMD Office of Sustainability
  • Be a part of the UMD Sustainability Outreach Team
  • Designing and executing a program through the sustainability fund
  • Volunteering with Engineering Without Borders
  • Participating in the solar decathlon

  • Working on the business management or marketing side of a commercial farm
  •  Be an intern with the Extension Student Internship Program

  • Activities that involve planning, organizing, assessing community needs, counseling, and leadership, in areas such as education, youth development, health and HIV/AIDS, the environment, and/or business
  • Develop and implement a project with funding from the School of Public Policy’s Do Good Institute
