Over four weeks this fall, the School of Public Health’s Community Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health (CEEJH) lab hosted the sixth annual Environmental Justice and Health Disparities Symposium. The free event was virtual this year due to Covid-19. 

There were nearly 1,000 registrants from at least 45 states and six countries. 

The event spanned four Saturdays and included speakers from community organizations, environmental justice advocacy groups, researchers, scholars, legal professionals, elected officials and more. 

John Salerno, a PhD candidate in behavioral and community health, was one of 28 students nationwide selected to present research at the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health poster session at this year’s American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting. 

Washington, DC is full of talented and ambitious young people, and the organization DC Inno recognizes a select group through their annual list of top innovators in the Washington region who are all under 25 years old. DC Inno, which calls itself, “your source for local innovation,” features local news about innovation in technology, startups, higher education and more.

Natasha D. Williams, a third-year Family Science doctoral student, is one of 60 scholars who was recently accepted to the 2020 cohort for Health Policy Research Scholars, a training and leadership program led by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest philanthropy dedicated to health.

Richard Remigio, a PhD candidate in Environmental Health Sciences, has received the NIH R36 Dissertation Award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for his research on the climate effects on health care delivery for medically-vulnerable populations.

A national survey of LGBTQ+ college students conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic finds that large numbers are struggling with substance use, psychological distress, and social isolation. The survey was led by doctoral student John P. Salerno (behavioral and community health) and the LGBTQ+ Students and Allies in Public Health organization.

With high rates of food security, high rates of uninsured patients and one of the least educated states in the nation, it is clear that Nevada has failed to prioritize public health, MHA student and Nevada native Fabian Donate wrote in The Nevada Independent.

We are standing at a pivotal moment in history: the most important election year of our lives, MPH student Cameron Etessami wrote in a Maryland Matters editorial. 

"The last years of the 2010s is what historians will describe as a time when the nation was lost, arguing turning to yelling, led by a populist that cared more about riling his base than the health of his nation," Etessami wrote. 

Clara Richards wants young professionals to know that it’s okay to not have it all figured out. She’s experienced that herself and says it has made her stronger. She has dedicated herself to helping fellow millennials, who define themselves as creators and builders, to find community and create “expansive impact” through her social entrepreneurship project called The Community Cooperative. She feels this mission is even more important in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
