As an elementary school student at West Baltimore’s P.S. 103, young Thurgood Marshall was so rambunctious that his teachers often sent him to a quiet room in the basement, where he was instructed to read the U.S. Constitution. By the time he finished elementary school in 1921, the late U.S. Supreme Court justice later said, he’d memorized it.

At the annual Maryland Research Excellence Celebration on April 16, more than 200 outstanding scholars and researchers, nominated by their deans, were recognized for their research success and visibility.

Kim shares why she decided to study health policy and management, how she overcame stigma around abortion research and how her research on contraception and abortion access could impact state and national health policies.

Chawin Reilly is a health policy analyst with the Maryland Department of Health. He works in the department’s Medicaid Provider Enrollment division, where he helps healthcare providers who serve the state’s Medicaid patients navigate the enrollment process. His team works directly with 110,000 providers, including individual physicians, hospitals and health systems in Maryland and neighboring states.

Professor Jie Chen and her research team will analyze Medicare claims data to investigate if health information technology reduces unnecessary emergency department visits, hospitalizations and hospital readmissions for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD)—conditions that cost an estimated $321 billion in the U.S. last year.
