Nine years after his journey to earn a doctoral degree began, Junaed Siddiqui crossed the stage at the Xfinity Center on May 23, 2023 to officially graduate from the School of Public Health. While the average public health doctoral student at UMD completes their Ph.D. within five years, Siddiqui is far from average.

Faculty from the School of Public Health will receive unprecedented funding to tackle some of society's biggest challenges, including a $3M grant to create an international alliance focused on alleviating food, energy and water insecurity, protecting environmental and global public health and bolstering community resilience in a changing climate.

Horowitz, a research professor with the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, is a leading advocate and researcher in dental public health and health literacy efforts.

Alice Horowitz, who retires from the University of Maryland this summer at age 89, has been a leading advocate and researcher in dental public health and in health literacy efforts. One of her crowning achievements was establishing SPH’s Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy (HCHL), named after her late husband, an internationally renowned dental epidemiologist, educator and public health advocate.

Tracking down reliable health care information and resources can be overwhelming. Proposed Maryland legislation aims to combat that by designating the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy as the state's Consumer Health Information Hub. 

October is Health Literacy Month! Our Horowitz Center for Health Literacy is holding its fourth annual Health Literacy in Action conference October 14-15, 2021.

Despite recent progress in U.S. COVID-19 vaccination, some populations, including the LGBTQ+ community, are lagging in vaccination rates. Vaccine confidence and access, often decreased in these communities because of systemic marginalization, are both important to protecting health equity. As Dr.

Alice Munkhoff Horowitz PhD '92 believes strongly in the power of health literacy to address health inequalities. And with a new gift pledged over five years, Dr. Horowitz will ensure that the Rima E. Rudd Dissertation Research Award in Health Literacy can continue to support the next generation of researchers who advance the science of health literacy.
