The University of Maryland has formalized one of its global partnerships, solidifying an existing relationship and opening the doors for enhanced collaboration. In May, School of Public Health Dean Boris Lushniak along with Dean Craig Beyrouty of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, signed a memorandum of understanding with Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro of Daystar University in Kenya.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, SPH faculty and staff convened for the spring assembly which included the annual awards ceremony honoring outstanding teaching, public health practice, service, mentoring and commitment to the school’s success and community. New this year, the 2nd Lieutenant Richard W. Collins III “Courage Against Hate” award was established through a partnership with Richard’s mother Mrs. Dawn Collins. The School of Public Health and Mrs.

This May, the University of Maryland School of Public Health recognized five outstanding members of the SPH community. Four individuals received the Distinguished Terrapin Award, the school's highest honor, and another received the Early Career Award. The awardees were recognized at the Dean's Recognition Ceremony on May 13, 2022 which was attended by members of the SPH Dean's Council, supporters and friends of the school, along with faculty, staff and students. The Gamma Zeta chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health is pleased to announce its 2022 inductees. At the virtual induction ceremony and poster awards reception on May 6, 2022, Dean Boris Lushniak, Principal Associate Dean Dushanka Kleinman, inducted 17 students, four faculty members, two alumni and one honorary member, Dr. Dianna Abney.

Each year during Convocation, the University of Maryland School of Public Health recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence and dedication in their educational and public health service activities.

This year’s Convocation, which took place on Wednesday, May 4, honored more than 180 students who received scholarships, fellowships and awards in 2021 and 2022.

Students were nominated by their respective departments for this special recognition and were congratulated by their department chairs and Dean Boris Lushniak.

Jordan Aquino (he/him), a first-year PhD student in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health and graduate assistant for the UMD-PRC, focuses on understanding factors that impact mental and sexual health among LGBTQ+ individuals. In particular, Jordan is interested in the design and implementation of interventions that aim to reduce stigma, suicide, substance use and HIV prevalence among LGBTQ+ people.  

We are proud of all of the participants that contributed to the richness of the 2022 SPH Research, Practice and Innovation Poster Session and Student Poster Competition.

Caring for young children is tough work, full of stressors and challenges that even the best equipped parents struggle with. Young mothers with a history of being abused or neglected as children must cope with their trauma, the uncertainties of young adulthood and the constant demands inherent in caring for small children. 

Family Science PhD candidate and UMD-PRC Investigator Natasha D. Williams (she/her) was recently selected for a dissertation award through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Research Scholars program. Her dissertation, titled: Mental health among Black lesbian, gay, and bisexual people: Examining patterns of risk, treatment utilization, and mental health management strategies will use quantitative analyses of population-level data and interview-based grounded theory methods to elucidate the mental health challenges Black LGB adults face and the ways in which they manage their mental health.
